  Victor Navone
   Interviewed by Marcio Bukowski

20-12-2001 - Victor Navone, was interviewed by Márcio Bukowski (3DMentes). Victor, becames worldwide famous , after he unleashed his Short Film, called Alien Song over the internet. In this animation, the little green Alien (see picture), named Blit, sing and mimic Gloria Gaynor, singing "I Will Survive" , with a "subtle" surprise at the end...

After the sucess of his animation, Navone was invited to work at PIXAR Studios.

Bukowski : How is your work at Pixar? Do you just animate? Do you design characters and
make set ups?

Navone : Normalmente eu somente animo. Mas ocasionalmente eu também faço alguns StoryBoards.

Bukowski : How do you prefer to animate characters? IK on legs and arms? FK on arms?
Morphing on face?

Navone : That really depends on the needs of the shot I'm working on, but in general I use FK on arms and IK on legs. In the face I like to have individual controls for each part of the face, instead of generic expressions in morph targets. For example, instead of having a "smile" control, I'd rather have separate controls for lifting and pulling the corners of the mouth, parting the lips, puffing the cheeks, etc. This allows for a lot more subtle variation in facial expressions.

Bukowski : Who were the animators that more influenced you and those who you like
nowadays?
Navone : nowadays? I never paid much attention to animation until I started doing it about 3 years ago, so I don't know a whole lot of animators' names. Of course I'm influenced now by the classic work of Chuck Jones and Disney's 9 old men.
At Pixar I get a lot of inspiration (and feedback) from Doug Sweetland, Andrew Gordon, Gini Santos and Bobby Beck, to name just a few.

Digital Paint - Photoshop

Bukowski : Do you still use Hash AM? Any other 3D software? Which software do you use
for composition?
Navone : I still use Animation: Master for my character modeling and animation. I use After Effects religiously for compositing, special effects and post-processing. I'm also looking into Cinema 4D for some of my non-character stuff.

Bukowski : What is you hardware at home? And what is it at pixar?
Navone : At home I work on a Macintosh G4, and sometimes on my wife's Pentium 2. At work we have SGI Octane 2s.

Bukowski : Which are your favorite movies and what have you seen recently that mostly
enjoyed?
Navone : I enjoy just about anything by Terry Gilliam, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. Lately I'm a big fan of Steven Soderburgh and Wes Anderson. I'm also a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki's animated films, especially his latest, "Spirited Away".
Bukowski : When did you realize that you would be an animator and when did you notice
that you realy have talent for that?

Navone : I figured out that I could actually animate about a few months after I started trying in 1998. I never thought I would actually get work as an animator (nor did I ever intend to) until after I completed Alien Song and the email and phone calls started flooding in.

Bukowski : How is the 3d animation marketplace there? Is it better for the guy that
animate, model, make light?
Navone : That's hard to say. You would probably have better luck getting into a company that makes computer games. The film animation business is hard to get into and is very competitive. I'm very lucky to have gotten in as easily and quickly as I did. Having diverse skills is good, but if you want to be an animator then your animation skills should shine above everything else.

Bukowski : What project are you currently working on at Pixar?
Navone : I am working in the Shorts department on promotional materials for Monsters, Inc., as well as the next Pixar Short.
